Evert Cup Starts Today at Indian Wells

Despite the loss of a couple of notable stars, some of the top names in women's tennis will be at the State Farm Evert Cup, which begins today at the Grand Champions Resort in Indian Wells.

Although Monica Seles and Mary Joe Fernandez had to withdraw because of injuries, most of the tour's stars will be playing: Martina Hingis, Lindsay Davenport, Steffi Graf, Amanda Coetzer, Conchita Martinez, Irina Spirlea, Nathalie Tauziat and Venus Williams are seeded first through eighth. All will have first-round byes.

The tournament, which runs through March 14, is held concurrently with the men's Newsweek Champions Cup, which begins Monday.
