Residents, Clergy Pray for an End to Woes Plaguing Community

March 07, 1998

About 150 people gathered in the Compton Civic Center Plaza on Friday to pray for solutions to problems that plague the city.

"Religious leaders believe there is a higher power, so we are seeking that power on the basis on Scriptures," said the Rev. Lonnie Dawson.

The prayer meeting was organized by the Southern Area Clergy Council, Dawson said, adding that local clergy members are concerned with various "continuous social dilemmas" that exist.

People are worried about gang problems, broken families and families with inadequate provisions and education, Dawson said.

The clergy also would like to see the rift resolved between city and state officials, who are battling for control of Compton schools.
