Cyclists to Get Smoother Ride With New Pier Ramp

By the time summer arrives, Redondo Beach cyclists will no longer have to take a detour on Catalina Avenue or through the International Boardwalk as they ride along the 26-mile beach path.

For the last few months the portion of the pier parking structure that cyclists must use as part of the path has been under construction. The city is spending $217,000 to widen the north entry and build a ramp to separate the pedestrian and bike paths.

When construction is completed cyclists will be able to ride their bikes through the structure on weekdays. Now they are instructed to walk their bicycles around the area.

Officials said the weekends bring large crowds to the beach, making it safer for everyone if cyclists dismount their bikes.

"The goal is to make the path safer and improve the line of site for people on bikes and pedestrians," said Steve Huang, city engineer.
