PREP BASKETBALL GAMES AT A GLANCE

Boys' Division Ii

March 14, 1998|MARTIN HENDERSON

Brea Olinda (31-1) vs. Fresno Edison (28-2)

1 TODAY PAULEY PAVILION

The state championship is March 20 in Sacramento, but the title might be won today. Brea is ranked No. 1 in the division and the state and Edison is ranked No. 2 in the state Division II poll by Cal-Hi Sports. Edison is similar to Compton Dominguez, except taller and a little better. Brea defeated Dominguez on Thursday, 68-54. Edison, which likes to run and press, averages 83 points. Edison is led by 6-foot-1 junior center Tonisha Yancey (15 points, eight rebounds) and 6-0 junior guard Java Johnson (14 points, seven rebounds). Brea defeated Edison in last year's Southern California semifinals at Brea, 80-44, but this year's Edison team is better and deeper. Lindsey Davidson is the only Brea starter back from last year's victory over Edison. She is averaging 13.4 points and shooting 52.5% from three-point range. Critical will be the play of 6-2 sophomore forward Chelsea Trotter (15.8 points, 8.4 rebounds) and 6-0 junior forward Kate Ides (8.1 points, 4.2 rebounds). Ides has been plagued by foul trouble, and Trotter injured her knee in Thursday's victory over Dominguez, so 5-11 senior Amanda Strum (5.6 points)--Brea's best defensive post--could play a major role. Trotter should be available to play. If not, it could be trouble for the Ladycats. Today's winner plays the Fair Oaks Del Campo (30-4)-Redding Shasta (27-2) winner for the state title.
