Slain Man's Family Asks for Help Solving Crime

March 17, 1998

Rose Reed heard the police helicopters as she drove toward her South Los Angeles home last August and wondered, "What's going on now?"

When she turned into her driveway on 111th Street, her daughter ran out out crying.

Her son, Tomir Hightower, who started a job earlier that day, had just been shot in the head at 110th and Hoover streets, said Los Angeles Police Det. Terry Carlos. He later died at a hospital.

On Monday, on what would have been Hightower's 21st birthday, his family held a vigil and issued an appeal to the public to help solve the crime.

Emmett Reed said he and his family are seeking justice.

"It is time for the people of the community to stop the violence," Reed said. "We need to stand up and be counted. He was a fine young man, a good student. We want to try to bring forth anyone who saw something to call the police."

The Los Angeles City Council has offered a $25,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the murder. Anyone with information should call (213) 237-1310.
