Project to Improve 40-Block Business District to Begin

March 17, 1998

A celebration to kick off the Figueroa Corridor Business Improvement District will be held Wednesday.

The district is designed to improve landscaping, security, marketing and maintenance along a 40-block stretch of Figueroa and Flower streets from the Santa Monica Freeway to Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. The improvements will begin Wednesday and will be financed by a tax on businesses in the area.

"It is easy to recognize the need to preserve this cultural and historic area as a clean and safe place in which to conduct business, continue education, visit a museum or attend a sporting event," said Darryl Holter, an area businessman.

The Figueroa Corridor includes 20 historical monuments, including the Old St. Peter's Episcopal Church, the Shrine Auditorium, the William Andrews Clark Memorial Library, the Doheny Mansion and the birthplace of Adlai Stevenson. Wednesday's events begin at 11:30 a.m. at the Automobile Club of Southern California at 2601 Figueroa St.
