Charter Panel Votes to Increase Number of Council Members

March 18, 1998

The elected Los Angeles charter revision commission has tentatively voted to expand the City Council from its current 15 members, who represent about 250,000 people apiece.

But the commission, which is drafting a proposed charter for voters' approval next year, reserved its decision on how large to make the City Council for later in its deliberations.

Los Angeles' City Council districts are the largest in the country.

Commissioners voted 10 to 4 late Monday night in favor of the expansion, with dissenters voicing concerns that expansion might mean higher costs that would undermine voters' support for charter reform efforts.

"I think it's a killer for charter reform," said dissenting Commissioner Dennis Zine.
