Curry Chosen a Freshman All-American

Edniesha Curry capped a record-setting season for the Cal State Northridge women's basketball team by being selected a Freshman All-American by Women's Basketball Journal.

Curry, a 5-foot-5 guard from Palmdale High, led the Big Sky Conference in scoring with an average of 17 points a game, set a Northridge record with 65 three-point baskets and led the Matadors with 477 points, 118 assists, 57 steals, 78 free throws and 100 defensive rebounds.

Curry spearheaded Northridge's best season since joining Division I in 1991. The Matadors finished 14-14, 9-7 in Big Sky games, and won a game in the Big Sky tournament.

Curry and Erin Buescher of UC Santa Barbara were the only players from the west named to the 10-player team.

Daniel Bobik of Newbury Park High has been selected Ventura County boys' basketball player of the year by the Ventura County Coaches Assn.

Bobik, a 6-6 guard who has signed a letter of intent with Brigham Young, averaged 20.6 points, 8.4 rebounds, 5.3 assists and 4.6 steals a game this season.

He helped the Panthers (24-5, 14-0) to their first outright Marmonte League title since 1981 and into the second round of the Southern Section Division II-A playoffs.

J.T. Stotts of Hart High was named the Foothill League player of the year for the second consecutive season.

Stotts, who averaged 23.6 points a game, led the Indians to their third consecutive Foothill League title and seventh in the past eight seasons.

Jerrohn Jordan and Fabian Leon of Valencia were selected to the all-league team along with Jeremy Cartee and Kevin Krose of Burroughs and Matt Bradley of Saugus.

BASEBALL

Former Notre Dame High and USC catcher Bobby Hughes has been told by the Milwaukee Brewers he has made their 25-man roster.

Hughes, 27, has spent the past six years in the minor leagues.

Hughes graduated from Notre Dame in 1989, attended Loyola Marymount, then transferred to USC.

He joins two other former players from the area with the Brewers. Jeff Cirillo (Providence) starts at third base and Mark Loretta (St. Francis) plays shortstop.

MOTOR SPORTS

M.K. Kanke of Granada Hills is leading the Featherlite Southwest Series' points standings with 325 points.

The series' next race will be March 28 at Cajon Speedway in El Cajon.
