UC Irvine Receives $1-Million Donation

March 20, 1998|LISA ADDISON

UC Irvine has received a $1-million gift from an anonymous donor to establish a new honors scholarship program that will enable the university to award full four-year scholarships to outstanding students who otherwise might not be able to afford a college education.

The first scholarships under the new endowment--to be known as the Distinguished Honors Scholars Program and intended for incoming freshmen students--are expected to be awarded this fall for the 1998-99 academic year.

"This gift represents philanthropy at its very best," UCI Chancellor Laurel L. Wilkening said. "Although the donors will remain anonymous, their heart-felt generosity will touch the lives of students in very visible and positive ways for many years to come."

Undergraduate candidates for the endowment must have achieved SAT scores in the top 2% of scores of students admitted to the university in the last five years.
