Council Rejects Plan for 45 Homes

March 20, 1998|DEBRA CANO and JOHN POPE

A plan to build 45 single-family homes at the northwest corner of Alta Vista Street and Rose Drive has been rejected by the City Council.

The council denied the request to change the parcel's zoning from commercial to residential. Councilwoman Maria Moreno abstained from voting.

Polygon / Hunsaker & Associate Inc. of Irvine had sought approval to rezone and subdivide the 10-acre site to build the homes.

A council majority, however, decided that a commercial development is needed in that area, which is next to the Alta Vista Country Club.

A commercial project would benefit both the city and the area's residents, said Mayor Norman Z. Eckenrode, noting the need for a balance.

"The highest and best use would be a commercial area because of all the [residential] development going on in the east end," Eckenrode said.

"The council has to look at the benefit for the entire community, rather than just for special interests."
