Cochran to Receive Award From Watchdog Group

Attorney Johnnie L. Cochran Jr. will receive the first Police Watch Tribute to Excellence Award at a dinner Sunday aboard the Queen Mary.

Cochran is being recognized for litigating various police misconduct cases, but especially for his role in winning a reversal of the 1972 murder conviction of former Black Panther leader Elmer "Geronimo" Pratt.

Police Watch, a Los Angeles law enforcement watchdog group founded in 1981, provides a legal referral service for victims of police abuse.

Community activist Michael Zinzun will receive the group's Henry Giler Award for his work to eliminate police use of excessive force.

Motown Records Chairman Clarence Avant is the dinner chairman. Bill Cosby and U.S. District Judge Robert A. Takasugi are honorary chairmen.
