Commission Upholds Firing of Prosecutor

March 20, 1998

The Los Angeles County Civil Service Commission has voted to uphold the district attorney's firing of veteran prosecutor Lawrence M. Longo for his handling of a 1992 assault case involving rap mogul Marion "Suge" Knight.

Longo was discharged from his post last year after articles in The Times revealing that Knight cut a record deal two years ago with the prosecutor's 18-year-old daughter and lived in a Malibu Colony home owned by Longo's family while the deputy district attorney was overseeing Knight's case.

Longo, who was fired for conflict of interest and other departmental policy violations, challenged the allegations in a series of Civil Service hearings between July and November in which the commission reviewed testimony from nearly two dozen witnesses. The ruling was issued Wednesday.
