When Teenagers Abandon Their Babies

March 22, 1998

Being a teenager and pregnant is not the end of the world. Yet too many young women believe that it is ("The Secret of Motherhood," by Susan Straight, Jan. 25). The media seem willing to report on these young girls who become pregnant, deliver and then abandon their newborns, but no one seems willing to offer help.

These young women are not stupid. They're quite scared, and they're afraid of what their friends will say or, worse, what their parents will do if they find out about the pregnancy. Most authorities aren't much better; when they discover that a young woman is pregnant, their first move is often not to counsel the woman but to immediately go after the father.

If these women had more information about their options, they might not be so inclined to throw away their infants.
