It was natural for the man who had Fred Astaire dance on the ceiling in "Royal Wedding" and made Gene Kelly get his feet wet in "Singin' in the Rain" to accept his honorary Academy Award with a ditty and a dance.

"Tonight, words seem inadequate," director Stanley Donen said. "In musicals, that's when we do a song." The orchestra started playing and Donen broke out in song. Donen, 73, made dozens of musicals and created some of film's most memorable moments.
