Accelerated Learning Program to Help Failing Students

March 25, 1998

School officials have set up an accelerated learning program for students in kindergarten through eighth grade who fail to pass a reading test required for promotion to the next grade.

The program will give students more individual attention in areas that need to be improved while they are held back a year.

In November, the Compton Unified School District adopted a policy that students must read at grade level as measured on either of two standardized tests before they can be promoted.

Students who don't pass the test will be required to go to summer school for reading instruction. If they still don't pass the test, they will be enrolled in the accelerated learning program.
