Late Volley by Kennedy Turns Back Granada Hills

March 25, 1998

Kennedy High was down, but Granada Hills ended up being out.

Kennedy pulled off a furious rally and defeated the Highlanders, 10-15, 7-15, 16-14, 15-8, 15-12, in a Northwest Valley Conference boys' volleyball match Tuesday at Kennedy.

Jeff Toon had 30 kills and seven blocks for Kennedy (5-1, 2-1 in conference play) and Jason Abel added 14 kills and eight blocks.

The Golden Cougars came back from a 13-8 deficit in the third game.

Toon delivered 25 of his 30 kills in the final three games.

Mike Aleman had 18 kills and Matt Koprowski added 17 for Granada Hills (5-1, 2-1), which won the conference title last season.

In other volleyball matches:

Taft d. Birmingham, 15-0, 15-1, 15-9--Joe Nargi and Tomer Firouzman each had seven kills for the Toreadors (5-0, 3-0) in a Northwest Valley Conference victory at Taft.

Chatsworth d. Cleveland, 15-0, 15-9, 15-1--David Lurth had 10 kills for the Chancellors (2-4, 1-2) in a Northwest Valley Conference victory at Chatsworth.

St. Monica d. Providence, 15-8, 17-15, 17-5--Senior outside hitter John Mitchell had 13 kills, 13 digs and three blocks for Providence (2-3) in a nonleague match at St. Monica.

BOYS' TENNIS

Granada Hills 7, San Fernando 0--Chris Yoo won at No. 1 singles and Steve Ishoo scored a victory at No. 2 singles for the Highlanders (6-0, 3-0) in a Northwest Valley Conference match at El Cariso Park.

Monroe 5, Grant 2--Robbie Parras, Danny Rubin, Joseph Jung and Matt Friedrich swept their singles matches in straight sets for the Vikings (5-1, 3-0) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference match at Grant.

Cleveland 4, Chatsworth 3--Tony Saavedra helped the Cavaliers (3-2, 1-1) win by beating Ali Bohra, 7-6 (7-3), 3-6, 6-4, at No. 2 singles in a Northwest Valley Conference match.

Crespi 10, Notre Dame 8--Carlos Gil and Mike Ianne won all three of their matches at No. 1 doubles for Crespi (7-3, 3-2) in a Mission League match at Braemar Country Club in Tarzana.

Ted Hall won all three of his matches at No. 1 singles for Notre Dame (2-3-1, 2-2).

GOLF

Arcadia 179, Crescenta Valley 214--David Murdahl and Chris Kwon each shot three-under-par 33 and the Apaches won a Pacific League match at Santa Anita Golf Course in Arcadia.

Dan Fischter shot a 41, and Ty Clark and Dave Calabrow each scored 42 for Crescenta Valley (4-5, 3-2).

Notre Dame 191, Loyola 205--Kevin Coghlan and Tommy Barber each shot two-over-par 37 and the Knights won a Mission League match at Lakeside Golf Club in Toluca Lake.

Sylmar 203, Verdugo Hills 260--Michael Briano shot even-par 36 and Matt Porco added a 37 for the Spartans (6-0-1, 5-0-1) in a City 2 League match at Knollwood Country Club in Granada Hills.

Nordhoff 384, Carpinteria 401--Jeff Coburn shot a one-over-par 73 and the Rangers (7-2) won a nonleague match at Soule Park Golf Course in Ojai.
