March 27, 1998|Associated Press

The average rate on 30-year fixed-rate mortgages was unchanged this week at 7.08%, Freddie Mac said. That leaves the average between a four-month high of 7.19%, reached at the start of March, and a four-year low of 6.89%, hit in mid-January. Fifteen-year mortgages, a popular option for refinancing, averaged 6.69% this week, down from 6.70% last week. On one-year adjustable-rate mortgages, lenders were asking an average initial rate of 5.70%, up from 5.67% and matching a nine-month high of 5.70% during the first two weeks of March. The rates do not include the add-on fees known as points.
