Reward Offered in Bakersfield Bank Robbery

March 27, 1998

A $25,000 reward was offered Thursday for information leading to the arrest and conviction of three men--possibly Los Angeles gang members--who robbed a Bakersfield bank March 6, the FBI said.

Dubbed "the Early Bird Bandits," the men robbed the Bakersfield Valley Plaza branch of the Bank of America about 7:45 a.m., said FBI spokesman John Hoos.

"They got their nickname because of the early time of day they committed the crime," Hoos said.

Two of the suspects, armed with handguns, forced their way into the bank, assaulted three bank employees and a courier and fled with an undisclosed amount of money, Hoos said.

The robbery was the second of a Bank of America branch in Bakersfield this month. On March 19, two suspects in the robbery of the other Bank of America branch were arrested after a 100-mile chase ended in a crash on the Harbor Freeway.

Anyone with more information is urged to call the WeTip hotline, (800) 78-CRIME.
