Catcher Burrill Makes Northridge Commitment

March 27, 1998

Catcher Brady Burrill of Valencia High committed Cal State Northridge on Thursday, increasing the number of Matador recruits to four.

Burrill, whose brother Casey was a catcher for Hart High and USC, is batting .435 after he finished at .487 with five home runs last season.

Burrill watched the Matadors (19-17) defeat UCLA on Saturday and spoke with his friend, Northridge outfielder Eric Horvat.

"Horvat had great things to say about [Coach Mike] Batesole," Burrill said. "I'm really looking forward to it."

The Matadors have commitments from right-handed pitcher James Garcia of West Torrance High, and infielder Brent Egan and outfielder Kevin Mellinger of Oxnard College.

Michael Brignac, a promising sophomore football-basketball player at Reseda High, has transferred to Westlake.

Brignac, who caught 11 passes for 158 yards and two touchdowns last season, has enrolled at Westlake without a change of residence. He received an interdistrict transfer from the Los Angeles Unified School District to the Conejo Unified School District.

According to Joseph Pawlick, Westlake assistant principal, Brignac sought and received his release from the LAUSD.

The Chaminade girls' soccer team, winner of the past two Southern Section Division III titles, will graduate eight seniors this year, but that shouldn't be a problem.

Last year's top eighth-grade girls' player in the region, Kim Taylor, enrolled at Chaminade and scored 17 goals this season. On Thursday, Coach Mike Evans said this year's premier eighth-grader, forward Kelly Lavery, will enroll at Chaminade in the fall.
