Chaminade's Skid Continues in 11-8 Setback in Malibu

Chaminade High's troubles continued when the Eagles lost, 11-8, to Malibu in a nonleague baseball game Saturday at Malibu.

It was the third consecutive loss for Chaminade (3-4-1).

The Eagles reached the Southern Section Division III semifinals last season.

Malibu (5-3), a Division V team, was 0-15 last season.

Chris Martinez hit a three-run home run for Chaminade, which led, 5-0, after the top of the first. The Eagles allowed six runs in the third inning.

Cameron Coughlan and Kyle Phelps hit home runs in the fifth to give the Sharks an 11-7 lead.

Phelps (1-2) relieved in the first inning and went the rest of the way, allowing four runs on six hits.

In another baseball game:

Agoura 17, Channel Islands 12--Brian Jacobsen drove in six runs with a home run, a three-run double and a run-scoring double and pitched a scoreless seventh inning in relief of Matt Bernstein for host Agoura (8-3, 1-2) in a Marmonte League game.

Bernstein (1-0) pitched 4 1/3 innings, striking out six and walking two while allowing six hits.

Ryan McCann drove in four runs for Agoura with a home run, a two-run home run and a run-scoring double, and Chris Poling stole six bases.

Charger starter Tyler Stauffer allowed nine runs in 1 2/3 innings.

SOFTBALL

Flintridge Sacred Heart 11, Holy Family 2--Lacey Smale had a double, triple and four runs batted in, and Ashley Gibbs added three hits and two RBIs for the Tologs (5-1) in the first round of the El Segundo tournament at Pine Field.

Tiffany Church had two hits for Flintridge Sacred Heart.

WRESTLING

Cristobal Gonzalez of Ventura High lost in his bid to become an All-American when Washington champion Guillermo Young of Lewis and Clark High beat him in a 189-pound consolation match, 5-3, in the National High School Wrestling Championships at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh.

Gonzalez, the state champion at 189 pounds, defeated Chris Bancroft of Chanute High in Kansas, 7-2, in an earlier consolation match.

He needed three more victories to finish in the top eight of his weight class and earn All-American honors.

He finishes with a 58-5 record, a Ventura High record for victories in a season.
