Grenade Was Fake, but Arrest Is Real

May 09, 1998

Explosives experts were sent to Pico Rivera on Friday after a sheriff's deputy found what appeared to be a hand grenade inside a car stopped for a traffic violation, authorities said.

The hand grenade turned out to be a practice grenade modified to look like a real one, said Sgt. Vincent Callier.

The car's driver, Armando Duran, 40, of Montebello, was arrested for possession of a facsimile bomb and was booked at the Pico Rivera sheriff's station, where he was being held in lieu of $250,000 bail, Callier said.
