Court Voids Amnesty for 37 ANC Officials

May 09, 1998|From Times Wire Reports

The High Court overturned a block amnesty granted by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission for 37 leaders of the ruling African National Congress, including Deputy President Thabo Mbeki. The commission was ordered to reconsider the 37 applications. The amnesties prompted opposition because they were granted in a block, without public hearings and without revealing what crimes were committed. Meanwhile, the National Sports Council suspended the South African Rugby Football Union for failing to remove obstacles to black participation at top levels of the sport.
