Target of Navy Probe to Get Highest Rank

May 09, 1998|From Times Wire Reports

The Navy has selected Timothy R. McVeigh for promotion to its highest enlisted rank, master chief petty officer, only months after losing a court battle aimed at forcing him from the service. McVeigh, who is not related to the convicted Oklahoma City bomber with a similar name, was dismissed in December on charges he is gay after being linked to an anonymous America Online computer profile page suggesting he had a sexual interest in young men.
