Bike Mishap Leads to Car Burglary Arrest

November 02, 1998|JASON TAKENOUCHI

A suspected auto burglar was foiled over the weekend after a serendipitous fall from his bicycle caught the attention of detectives.

Police say detectives stopped to question Jason Michael Dyer, 19, after he fell from a bicycle late Saturday night, dropping an odd array of property--including rain boots, a raincoat and cassette tapes--on the ground in the 2600 block of Bolker Drive.

At about the same time, the Port Hueneme Police Department received a report of an auto burglary in the 2400 block of Bolker.

After a witness tied Dyer to the burglary and the car owner identified the stolen property, police arrested Dyer and took him to Ventura County Jail, where he remains in custody in lieu of $10,000 bail.

Dyer, a transient, is on probation for narcotics offenses, police say.

Sgt. Chris Graham said the bicycle crash was a lucky break. "That put this case together," he said.
