Pro Football Week 9

Tonight's Game

November 02, 1998|JERRY CROWE

DALLAS AT PHILADELPHIA

* Kickoff: 5:15 p.m.

* TV: Channel 7.

* Records: Cowboys 4-3; Eagles 1-6.

* Story line: Troy Aikman, who sat out five games because of a broken left collarbone, returns for the Cowboys. "I feel fine," he said. "It's been hard to watch from the sidelines regardless of whether the team was struggling or doing well." The Cowboys were 3-2 and moved into the NFC East lead with Jason Garrett at quarterback, but they're coming off a 13-12 loss to the Chicago Bears on Oct. 18. Garrett missed Michael Irvin on a two-point conversion attempt in the third quarter, which turned out to be the difference in the game. The Cowboys' Emmitt Smith, fourth in the NFC with 699 yards rushing, has rushed for 1,756 yards against the Eagles, his most against any team, and has at least one 100-yard rushing game against them in six consecutive seasons. He and the Cowboys are positioning themselves for another division title. How about the struggling Eagles, coming off a 13-10 loss to the San Diego Chargers? "There's a lot left to play for," quarterback Rodney Peete said. "Yeah, we're 1-6, but we've got eight or nine games left to make it respectable." They're not there yet, having defeated only the 1-7 Washington Redskins. Their offense ranks last in the league and star receiver Irving Fryar has yet to score a touchdown. "Your dog has the same amount of touchdowns as I do this year," Fryar told a reporter the other day. "You want me to cry? I've got to laugh to keep from crying."

* Line: Cowboys by 6 1/2
