Emergency Phone Number Offered for Cellular Phones

November 03, 1998

Police launched a program Monday that links cellular telephone callers with the city's police dispatch center.

Dubbed "Cell Watch," the effort is part of the department's community policing effort, and is designed to be especially helpful for Neighborhood Watch groups, said Monrovia Police Capt. Roger Johnson.

Until now, a cellular phone user reporting a crime had to call 911, which connected the caller to the California Highway Patrol. The call would then be transferred to the Monrovia police dispatch center.

The new Cell Watch number is (626) 357-CELL, or (626) 357-2355.
