Training Exercise Will Burn 300 Acres

November 04, 1998|HOLLY J. WOLCOTT

A 300-acre prescribed burn will occur today at South Mountain east of Saticoy as a way for county and state firefighters to practice using specialized equipment and to study fire behavior.

The burn will run between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. near Percolation Basin off Los Angeles Avenue, Ventura County Fire Department spokeswoman Sandi Wells said. The exercise will involve engine companies, hand crews and bulldozers.

The purpose of the burn also includes assessing fuel loading, studying wildlife habitat and watershed protection, team building and formulating an incident command system. Other general purposes include fire hazard reduction for the area and improving cattle feeding conditions by reducing brush.

Agencies expected to be involved are the county Fire Department's wild-land fire unit; the state Department of Forestry; the U.S. Forest Service; the National Park Service; the Ventura County Farm Bureau; the county's Cattle Assn.; and the Air Pollution Control District.
