Preis, Reynoso Enjoyed an Oktoberfest

November 12, 1998

Mike Preis, a junior soccer forward from Chatsworth High, and Katrina Reynoso, a cross-country runner and swimmer, were selected Cal State Northridge athletes of the month for October.

Preis had eight goals and four assists last month.

Reynoso, who is from Berlin, placed third in two events of a swim meet against Loyola Marymount.

Miracle worker: Although the women's team at Oxnard College won only four games, Coach Mike Scanlon's direction of the Condors qualifies as a mini-miracle.

Scanlon, 52, was fired at Moorpark College in 1997 after guiding the Raider women's team to a 26-5-4 record. He inherited an Oxnard team that had not won a game since 1994.

Injuries and missed practices plagued the Condors (4-16-1, 3-12-1), many of whom are absent from workouts because of jobs or family obligations. Scanlon's hard work with his 16 players, including 14 freshmen, paid off.

"They're very family-oriented young women and those arrangements are fine with me for this year," Scanlon said. "But I've told them that next year they will have to make arrangements and be more committed."

Moving on: Montclair Prep has joined the Delphic League for girls' basketball. The Mounties leave the Westside League, where they did not lose in four seasons.

On the rise: Cal Lutheran moved up one spot to ninth place in the American Volleyball Coaches Assn. NCAA Division III women's poll.

The Regals (21-2), will play at 4:30 p.m. Friday in a Division III West Regional semifinal at UC San Diego against the winner of a match today between Colorado College and 12th-ranked Cal State Hayward.

Fishy situation: Lake Casitas will be stocked today with 1,500 pounds of catchable-sized rainbow trout for the first time this season.
