The Orange County Water District was awarded the 1998 Governor's Environmental and Economic Leadership Award recently for its Prado Wetlands and Reconstruction Project.

The Prado system, one of the largest constructed wetlands on the West Coast, improves water quality by removing nitrates from the Santa Ana River and serves as a protected habitat for endangered birds. The award, established by Gov. Pete Wilson in 1993, is one of the state's highest environmental honors.
