Army Sets Opening of Recruiting Office

November 18, 1998|CHRIS G. DENINA

The Army has announced plans to open a recruiting station in Thousand Oaks to better serve area residents, Army officials said.

The new office will open Nov. 25, and the grand opening, complete with a tank on display and festivities, will be Dec. 12.

"There's a certain [portion of the] population that requires coverage by a recruiter," said Sgt. 1st Class Kevin M. DeVos, who is station commander of the Simi Valley recruiting office. "That's 15,000 to 30,000 per recruiter."

DeVos said the office, which he will head, will enable recruiters to spend more time recruiting and less time commuting to the Conejo Valley. Currently, eight recruiters from the Simi Valley station cover both communities.

This isn't the Army's first attempt at establishing a local presence in the Conejo Valley. In 1992, the Army closed a recruiting station in Thousand Oaks.
