Santa Barbara City College defeated Glendale to win the Southern California Regional men's soccer playoffs in a shootout, 2-2 (4-3), at John Ferraro Field after a bizarre play allowed Santa Barbara to tie the score in overtime.
Elvin Cruz scored on a header to give Glendale (20-2-1) a 2-1 lead in overtime, but during the celebration, Santa Barbara (20-2-2) raced to midfield and resumed play. Alberto Moreno scored an uncontested goal to force the shootout.
Jeff Saucedo scored in the 20th minute for Santa Barbara and Melvin Tejada tied the game for Glendale late in the second half.
The top girls in the region will begin competition today in three preliminary rounds of the Southern Section individual tournament, being played at six sites, including Agoura and Oak Park highs.
Among the highest-seeded players are Tiffany Brymer of Rio Mesa High, Shervin Saedinia of Calabasas, Brooke Borisoff of Agoura and Nina Yaftali of Westlake in singles, and Margo O'Donnell and Rebecca Hunau of Simi Valley in doubles.
The tournament includes singles and doubles champions and runners-up from each league in the Southern Section.
The top four singles players and the top four doubles teams at each site advance to the round of 16 and quarterfinals Dec. 3 at the Racquet Club of Irvine, with winners there moving on to semifinal and final matches Dec. 4.
Derek Snyder of Chaminade High finished 14th and 27th in junior events in the U.S. Fencing Assn.'s North American Cup.
Snyder is ranked No. 2 nationally in under-17 men's foil and No. 7 in epee.
Vinnie Carbone, Michele Cordi, Matt McConnaughy and Chris Smith of Chaminade each finished in the top 100.
Elizabeth Blase of Harvard-Westlake placed 30th in junior women's foil.
Tryouts for the Freeway Flyers Girls' Volleyball Club are scheduled for Nov. 28-29 in the Glendale College gym.
High school juniors and seniors may try out from 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. each day.
High school freshmen and sophomores' tryouts will be from noon-3 p.m., with seventh- and eighth-graders trying out from 3:30-6 p.m.

The sixth annual Gobbler Games tournament is being staged by Mid-Valley Youth Baseball Nov. 27-29 and continuing Dec. 5-6.
The invitational event is for players 5-14 and is expected to draw more than 50 teams from throughout Southern California.
