Get a Boost by Going With the Grain

November 26, 1998

It might be one of the best things you can do for yourself: Eat fiber. OK, maybe it doesn't sound terribly sexy. But think about the benefits of a diet high in fiber:

* It helps you maintain a healthy weight because high-fiber foods tend to be lower in fat, and they fill you up more.

* It helps lower blood cholesterol.

* It helps keep blood sugar within a normal range.

* It aids digestion and helps prevent constipation.

Some excellent sources of fiber--you need about 25 to 30 grams a day--include whole-grain breads and cereals, fresh whole fruits and dried fruits, nuts and seeds, and legumes.
