He Was Man Ray

November 28, 1998

Regarding William Wilson's review of the Man Ray exhibition at the Getty ("A Model Surrealist," Nov. 12):

When I was growing up in Hollywood during the 1940s and '50s, Man Ray and his wife Juliet were constant visitors at our house and were great friends of my parents (my father was MGM composer Herbert Stothart). I have never, ever heard of Man Ray referred to as "Ray"--except by you. He would not have tolerated that. His name will always remain two words as one, Man Ray. And by the way, Juliet was never known as Juliet Ray; she was always Juliet Man Ray.
