Final Payment on Park Bond to Be Celebrated

October 01, 1998|STEVE CARNEY

Like homeowners gleefully torching their mortgages after the final payment, Laguna Beach city officials will hold a mock bond-burning today to celebrate the end of 30 years of payments to finance Main Beach Park.

Current and former City Council members will join members of the public improvement corporation that oversaw the bond payments and others involved with the project, including the Festival of Arts. Lease payments from the festival have paid most of the bond debt over the years.

The downtown park, which opened 25 years ago, is considered one of the most picturesque along the coast. The public ceremony begins at 5 p.m. at the park, on South Coast Highway at Broadway.

Following, at 6 p.m., Mayor Steve Dicterow will dedicate a mural depicting various aspects of life in Laguna Beach, "A View From the Mountains to the Sea." The unveiling will be at Forest Lane Pocket Park, 248 South Coast Highway, and coincides with the Laguna Beach Arts Walk, a tour of galleries in the city that occurs the first Thursday of every month.
