October 01, 1998|JOHN CANALIS

Police negotiators talked an assault suspect holed up in his home into surrendering safely Tuesday night, authorities said.

Officers responded at 4:10 p.m. to 359 Aster St. after neighbors reported that Jeffrey Cecil Todd, 36, assaulted a neighbor and his dog with a knife. No one was injured in the scuffle.

When officers arrived at the home, Todd ran inside, police said. Officers attempted to persuade the suspect to leave his home, but he refused, police said.

Officers and firefighters evacuated residents on Aster Street, between Cypress Drive and Monterey Street, during the two-hour standoff.

The suspect surrendered without incident at 6:15 p.m., police said. He was booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and taken to Orange County Jail.
