Ease Up on the Gas

October 01, 1998

Regarding "You in the Rolling Fortress, Give the Little Guy a Break!" [Carmentary, by Cathy Curtis, Aug. 27]:

Up here in the Northwest's version of Yuppieville, every third vehicle is a sport-utility vehicle of some kind, and they drive with the same kind of reckless abandon and "up yours" attitude as in L.A.

Even in my Volvo 740 wagon, I feel only semi-protected at best against these four-wheeled dreadnoughts. I'm not sure what the solution is. Maybe we fickle Americans will soon tire of SUVs and go on to the Next Big Thing.

I enjoyed Curtis' article about the "my thing isn't very big, so I've got a big car to compensate" drivers. Don't be intimidated by them. Remember, the T. rex had a brain the size of a walnut (which would be a bit generous to some SUV drivers), and you'll see most big dogs running from the runty pit bull.
