Seagraves Spurred Growth Via Big-Time Sponsorships

Bob Gobrecht of Palos Verdes Estates has been named president and chief executive of the Unlimited Hydroplane Racing Assn. Gobrecht, whose wife, Chris, is the women's basketball coach at USC, is a former marketing executive with the Angels.

Although Bart Bast joined cousins Mike and Steve as national speedway motorcycle champions last Saturday night at Costa Mesa Speedway, the AMA held its version of the U.S. title at the Gold Country Fairgrounds in Auburn, Calif., where 1997 world champion Greg Hancock was the winner. Bast was second, followed by defending U.S. champion Mike Faria, Bobby Hedden and Charlie Venegas. The Costa Mesa track operates outside AMA jurisdiction.

For the third consecutive year, Matt Alcone of Irvine drove his Alcone Motorsports catamaran to the American Power Boat Assn.'s open class championship off Palm Beach, Fla. Jerry Gilbreath handled the throttle. In the Super Vee final, former world speedway motorcycle champions Bruce Penhall and Dennis Sigalos drove Ocean Spray to victory on Sigalos' 39th birthday.
