Album Review / Pop

October 10, 1998|SANDY MASUO

*** Depeche Mode, "The Singles '86-'98," Mute/Reprise. Depeche Mode's dark dance-pop contributed as much to contemporary electronic-industrial music as Ministry's harsher machinations. This collection, which picks up where the 1985 compilation "Catching Up With Depeche Mode" left off, assembles 21 tracks that emphasize why the British group remains so influential, including a new song, "Only When I Lose Myself," as opulently melancholy and melodic as anything else in DM's repertoire.
