How can pancakes benefit fish?

When FISH stands for Friends In Service to Humanity, and the pancakes are served at an all-you-can-eat fund-raising buffet today to benefit the charity.

FISH, a United Way organization that's celebrating its 30th year, offers short-term assistance for needy families in Costa Mesa, Irvine and Newport Beach.

In the first three months of 1998, FISH helped 1,100 families with more than $50,000 worth of food and nearly $20,000 in rental assistance and other aid, including utility payments to prevent shut-offs, gasoline and child care. The organization also delivers meals to the elderly and homebound.

All proceeds from today's fifth annual Breakfast by the Bay will benefit FISH. The buffet will run from 9 a.m. to noon at the Newport Dunes Resort, 1131 Backbay Drive.

Tickets are $8 for adults and $2 for children younger than 12. Children who bring a new toy for the FISH annual Christmas drive will be admitted free.
