$100,000 Gift Will Help Rebuild Towers

October 14, 1998

A $100,000 donation will help rebuild the Watts Towers, a historic landmark that is scheduled to be totally restored by 2000, a tourism official said.

"The Watts Towers are one of Los Angeles' earliest cultural icons and are known the world over," said George D. Kirkland, president of the Los Angeles Visitors and Convention Bureau.

"Their restoration will add to the attractiveness of Los Angeles as a visitor destination," Kirkland said.

American Express gave the funds Tuesday after matching an amount raised by members of the travel industry, an American Express spokesman said.

The money is earmarked to repair 54 flying buttresses that will stabilize the three tallest towers, officials said.
