Super Catholic League Gets Closer to Reality

October 15, 1998|GARY KLEIN

The Catholic Athletic Assn. has approved a proposal that creates a new "Super Division I" Angelus League for football. Pending ratification by the 46 schools in the CAA, the Angelus League will include Loyola, La Puente Bishop Amat, Bellflower St. John Bosco, Santa Ana Mater Dei, Santa Margarita and Anaheim Servite.

The CAA also approved configurations for the Del Rey and Mission leagues.

La Canada St. Francis, Sherman Oaks Notre Dame, Encino Crespi, West Hills Chaminade and North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake are to play in the Del Rey League.

Torrance Bishop Montgomery, Playa del Rey St. Bernard, Santa Fe Springs St. Paul and Gardena Serra are to be in the Mission League.

The CAA schools have until Friday to appeal the changes, and a ratification vote will be taken Oct. 21 only if there are appeals. Otherwise, the new alignments will be for three years, beginning in the fall of 1999.

The St. Paul football team goes for its fifth consecutive shutout Friday when the Swordsmen travel to St. John Bosco for a nonleague game.

The Southern Section record for shutouts in a season is 10, set by Cerritos Valley Christian in 1985. Compton in 1928, West Covina in 1965, Villa Park in 1981 and Riverside Ramona in 1982 all recorded nine shutouts.

Long Beach Wilson's boys' water polo team, ranked first in the state, continued to roll toward a third consecutive Southern Section Division I title by winning the Southern California Invitational in Irvine last weekend.

Wilson defeated Newport Harbor, 11-5, in the championship match behind juniors Tony Azevedo, who had four goals and three assists, and Albert Garcia, who had three goals and three steals.

Senior goalie Jaison Robinson made eight saves for Wilson and hurt Newport Harbor repeatedly with his passing.
