Rivalry Off and Running Again

Horse Racing

Oak Tree: Silver Charm and Free House meet for first time since 1997 Belmont on Saturday at Santa Anita.

June 7, 1997--Belmont Stakes: Silver Charm (even money), the entry of Touch Gold and Wild Rush, and Crypto Star were all favored over Free House. Desormeaux patiently waited with Free House off the pace, then moved alongside Silver Charm on the far turn. They brushed one another in the stretch, but Silver Charm shook loose inside the eighth pole and appeared to be home free. Touch Gold beat them both, Silver Charm losing by three-quarters of a length. "Turning for home, I thought I couldn't lose," Desormeaux said. "I thought it was going to be the Preakness all over again--a head bob--but then there came Touch Gold."
