Persian Cultural Event Planned This Weekend

October 17, 1998|JAMES MEIER

The fifth annual celebration of Mehregan, the Persian festival of autumn, will take place from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. today and Sunday at Lakeside Park, next to the Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre.

Mehregan, more than 2,500 years old, is a celebration of nature, seasons and the birthday of light.

The Mehregan Organizing Committee has dedicated this year's event to Molana Jala-Al-Din Rumi, a famous Persian philosopher and mystical poet who lived about 700 years ago.

The nonprofit event features Persian dancing and music, arts and crafts, ancient sports, plays and food.

More than 15,000 people attended last year's celebration.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $3 for children. Food is additional. Free parking is available in the Wild Rivers parking lot. Information: (949) 851-3993.
