May Co. Building to Reopen as LACMA West

October 22, 1998

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art's new satellite facility--known as LACMA West--will open Sunday in a historic building at Wilshire Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue.

Located in a 1939 building that was once home to the May Co. department store, the facility contains a gallery for children and families, a satellite space for the Mt. Washington-based Southwest Museum, and a gallery for visiting exhibitions.

The exhibition gallery's first show--a collection of Van Gogh masterpieces--will open in January, said museum spokesman Adam Coyne.

LACMA West also holds an art workshop that will be used to receive school groups, Coyne said.

The renovated five-story Streamline Moderne-style building, named a local historical cultural monument, has been mostly vacant since its purchase in 1994 by the county museum.
