Heisman candidate: Lauren Fleshman of Canyon High, who has won seven of eight cross-country races this season, is one of 10 female finalists for the state's High School Heisman Program award.

The program, sponsored by a fast-food chain, honors high school seniors who display excellence in academics, community service and athletics.


World-class: The U.S. national team, including Jeff Nygaard, from UCLA, and Tom Sorensen, of Pepperdine, will face the Brazilian national team at 7 p.m. Monday at Pepperdine in a final tuneup before the World Championships.

Admission is $10.


Welcome back: The Reseda High boys' team will stage an alumni game on Nov. 17 at 7:30 p.m. at the school.

Vanessa Atler of Canyon Country will be among a trio of U.S. gymnasts who will compete Wednesday through Nov. 9 in the Australia Cup in Melbourne.

Atler won gold medals in the vault and floor exercise at the Goodwill Games over the summer. Competing for the American team along with Atler will be Tent Wells of Berkeley and Chris Young of Winston-Salem, N.C.
