Katella Wins Despite Late Fumbles

October 31, 1998

Katella kept it close with late turnovers, but hung on to defeat Century, 12-6, in an Empire League game Friday night at Glover Stadium.

The Knights (6-1-1, 2-0-1) fumbled the ball away three times in the second half, but Century turned only one of the mistakes into points.

After Katella running back Richard Mango fumbled on the Knights' 39-yard line, Century backup quarterback Gil Godinez hit Ralph Ramos for a 28-yard touchdown pass to make it 12-6.

Katella quarterback Chris Haller (five of 11 for 160 yards) fumbled the first snap of the next possession to set up Century at the Knights' 21-yard line. Peter Espinoza's 31-yard field goal attempt was blocked by a host of Knights.

Century (2-6, 1-2), which got the ball again after a fumble by Francis Johnson with 2:56 remaining, got a first down after pass-interference penalty on fourth and 15 but still came up empty.

Johnson led the Knights with 80 yards in 27 carries, and had a fourth-quarter 53-yard touchdown run erased because of a holding penalty.

Valley Christian Handles the Heralds

Cerritos Valley Christian quarterback Tim Vanderhook completed 12 of 17 passes for 172 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Crusaders to a 34-8 victory over Whittier Christian in an Olympic League game Friday at Whittier College.

Luke Coleman scored on a two-yard run in the first quarter for Valley Christian. Vanderhook hit Erik Streelman on a 45-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter.

Whittier Christian (5-3, 1-2) cut the lead to 19-8 at the half on Matt Jones' two-yard touchdown run, followed by his two-point conversion run, but Valley Christian outscored the Heralds, 15-0, in the second half.
