Program to Target Drivers Who Run Red Lights

September 01, 1998

Cameras intended to catch drivers who run red lights will be installed at Washington and La Cienega boulevards, officials said.

A pair of cameras will photograph the front and back of vehicles that go through red lights at the busy intersection, which experiences a high level of traffic collisions, said Sgt. Seth Fogel of the Culver City Police Department.

During a 30-day trial period that begins Sept. 14, drivers who run a red light will be issued warnings by mail but will not be cited, said city public information officer Randi Joseph.

After the introductory period, violators will be fined $270. Citations are sent by mail, accompanied by the photos.

If the camera proves successful in reducing the number of collisions, the program may be expanded to other streets, Joseph said.
