John Beattie, the boys' and girls' track and field coach at Ventura High, was listed in stable condition Tuesday after undergoing surgery to replace his aortic valve at Community Memorial Hospital in Ventura on Monday.

Beattie set a then-Ventura school record of 9:29.4 in the 3,200 meters as a senior in 1980, but doctors told him during his freshman year at Occidental College that he needed to restrict his activity level until he got his aortic valve replaced.

He waited to have surgery so that technology could improve.

Devin Montgomery, who led San Fernando High to a North Valley League title last season, will apply to the Southern Section for an open enrollment transfer to Alemany this week, Alemany Athletic Director Dudley Rooney said.

Montgomery, a 6-foot senior guard who averaged 18.5 points and 4.5 assists last season, applied to the school two days before the mandatory May 15 deadline date, Rooney said.

Darryl McDonald, an assistant at San Fernando the last seven years and Montgomery's club coach, was hired as Alemany's coach May 14. Montgomery is the fourth former club player of McDonald's to apply for a transfer to Alemany.

Rooney said he should have the required forms filled out and submitted by Thursday and expects an answer in about a week.
