Smoking Blamed for Woman's Death in Fire

September 04, 1998|ROB O'NEIL

Careless smoking by the victim was the cause of a residential fire that killed an elderly woman, fire officials said Thursday.

The 80-year-old woman, whose identity was withheld pending notification of relatives, was found dead by firefighters who went to a home in the 13700 block of Shablow Avenue just after 8 p.m. Wednesday.

Officials said the fire, which was limited to the bedroom where the body was found, was already out when they arrived.

L.A. Fire Department spokesman Bob Collis said the victim was disabled, but it had not been determined whether her condition contributed to her death.
