OUTLOOK

Southern California Christian might be the least-prepared team in the county this season, but the Flames don't lack motivation. After their coach quit three weeks ago, many of the players figured the season would be canceled soon after. But Degenhardt saw the Flames' plight and decided to apply for the job. Degenhardt, who previously coached freshman football at Marina and freshman baseball at Huntington Beach, was hired Aug. 30 and the players were informed the next morning. "A few of the players were on vacation or, for other reasons, were difficult to get ahold of because they had already figured the season was over," Degenhardt said. "But the ones who made it were very enthusiastic, especially considering the heat wave we've been stuck in." Degenhardt realizes he inherits a difficult situation. The Flames made headlines last season for giving up the 10th-highest point total in Southern Section history, losing their season finale, 82-0, to Redlands Arrowhead Christian. Because of injuries, SCC suited up only 12 players for that game and was down to 11 by the end. The Flames were shut out in their five league games last season, giving up 304 points during that span.
